Description

Portage County will be changing our structure of the current Coroner Department from an elected official to an appointed Chief Medical Examiner. This change will take place effective Jan. 1, 2018. This is a brief summary of the job duties:

The Chief Medical Examiner directs and administers the operations and personnel of the Medical Examiner’s Office in determining the cause and manner of death. This includes providing death investigations, through gathering physical evidence, examinations, and performing interviews. The office also provides cremation authorizations and disinterment permits for Portage County. The Chief Medical Examiner shall perform the duties required under the law including those outlined in Wis. Stats. Chapter 19, 69, 979, 30.67(6), 48.981, 59.34 and others as applicable, and as may be amended by law.

The position is an appointed position per Wisconsin State Statutes 59.17 (2)(br). Performs as a collaborative member of Portage County’s management team, participating in department and County leadership and management functions under the direction of the County Executive.
 

These are the skills we are seeking:

  1. Associate degree in paramedic, nursing, biology, medicine, pre-med, forensic science or criminal justice or related field required.

  2. Two years’ experience in medical investigations.

  3. Experience as a Deputy Medical Examiner or Coroner with equivalent of 2-3 years of full time work.

  4. Possession of or ability to obtain American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) board certification.

  5. Any combination of education and experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position.

  6. Must possess a valid driver’s license and access to an insured vehicle for business related travel.

  7. Must be available twenty four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week, unless proper replacement and reported to dispatching/paging agency.
