Description


The Portage County Public Library is hiring a part-time (25 hrs / wk) Library Associate.  This position is based out of the Stevens Point location however some hours may be spent at the other branch locations.

This position starts at $18.27 / hr.

What are the primary job duties?

 

Performs a wide-variety of basic customer service activities at the customer service desks.

  • Performs circulation desk procedures, such as checking out materials, checking in materials, registering patrons, collecting overdue charges and other fees, issuing borrowers cards according to established procedures, and taking reserves; prepares circulation desk for use.
  • Answers telephone, answers directional questions in person or by telephone, may answer questions regarding status of patron and circulation records, and refers library customers to appropriate personnel as necessary.
  • May assist both adults and children in use of library’s online catalog, and may assist borrowers in routine location of library materials.  Refers library customers with complex questions to reference desk personnel or other appropriate personnel.


Performs a wide variety of activities which support the library, particularly the circulation work unit; prepares library materials for circulation.
 

  • Prepares lost item notices and other notices according to procedures.
  • Handles reserve requests and prepares items for customer pickup; searches for missing library materials such as items marked "claims returned,” “Missing,” or "Trace." If items are found, clears customer record and corrects bibliographic records according to procedures. Helps maintain patron database.
  • May receive and prepare periodicals and newspapers according to procedures; may contact vendors and process claims.
  • May help maintain the printed list of magazines and distributes copies at least once a year.
  • Responds to user complaints concerning problems with circulation procedures presented in person, by telephone, or by email; looks into reasons for problem described, explains procedure, corrects any procedural errors made by the library, refers to Library Specialist and/or Librarian any problems for which assistance is needed.


What are the minimum requirements?

 
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Prior library experience preferred.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license and good driving record.
