The Portage County Planning & Zoning department is hiring a full-time Senior Conservation Technician to join the team!
Summary of Position
The position provides engineering technical design and conservation planning on erosion control, storm water, wildlife enhancement, surface and groundwater protection practices, and other best management practice designs. The position will provide agricultural resource planning and technical assistance toward implementation of the County’s Land and Water Resource Management Plan and provide nutrient management planning and shoreland restoration assistance to landowners. The position provides geographic information system (GIS) and other inventory assistance to County staff.
- Meet with landowners, local government representatives, and other clients to discuss conservation planning options, technical designs, and construction practices to implement Best Management Practices to protect the County’s water and soil resources as recommended in the adopted LWRM Plan.
- Provide engineering technical design and construction inspection services for erosion control, stormwater management, wildlife enhancement, and surface and groundwater protection practices.
- Conduct field surveys of elevations, drainage ways, topographic surveys, etc. using professional survey instruments and equipment
- Assist the County Conservationist and Director of Planning and Zoning with other tasks identified requiring conservation planning and engineering technical assistance.
- Provide engineering technical design and conservation planning on erosion control, shoreland restoration, storm water, wildlife enhancement, surface and groundwater protection practices, and other best management practice designs as needed.
- Provide nutrient management planning assistance to landowners.
- Provide GIS and other natural resource inventory assistance.
- Implement State soil and water resource management conservation plans, surface and groundwater protection.
- Conduct farmland preservation compliance reviews according to WI State Statute Chapter 91.
- Conduct Natural Resources Chapter 151 administrative code conservation compliance reviews for conservation plans, surface, and groundwater protection.
- Conduct Planning and Zoning permit compliance reviews for surface and ground water protection.
What are the minimum qualifications?
- Bachelor's Degree in watershed management, soil and water conservation, soil science, geography, natural resources, planning, engineering technician, or a related field
- Three years' experience working with natural resource issues as an engineering technician or aide is required;
- Any combination of education and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Valid driver's license and access to an insured vehicle.
