The Portage County Highway department is hiring a full-time Mechanic to join their team!

Minimum pay is $29.57 / hr (there is an opportunity for Mechanic II wage with ASE Certification)

Mechanic I range $29.57 - $35.72 / hr
Mechanic II range $31.64 - $38.22 / hr


What are the primary job duties?
 

  • Perform major diesel engine repair and overhauls on a variety of highway related equipment.
  • Perform mechanical maintenance, upkeep, repair, and overhaul on all related highway equipment.  Work to include repair of electrical systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, differential and other motor train related repairs.
  • Repair and maintenance on chassis and bodies of vehicles and highway construction equipment.
  • Perform mechanical responsibilities in the highway shop, on the road, and in the field.
  • Provide proper winter maintenance such as plowing snow, salting and sanding of hazardous winter conditions when needed. 
  • Must be available to be called to work seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day to handle emergency work conditions to provide safe and economic conditions.


What are the minimum requirements?
 

  • High school diploma or its equivalent required. Associate in diesel mechanics preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in the commercial, industrial, or private mechanic  shop.  Experience in diesel and heavy construction equipment preferred. 
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire and safe driving record. Must possess a safe driving record.
  • Any combination of experience and professional training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities.
