Description


The Portage County Highway department currently has a Limited Term General Laborer position opening. This position is needed approximately December 16th, 2024 - through the end of May, 2025.


2024 Starting pay: $23.30 / hr


Position Summary:


This position is responsible for the performance of a variety of work of the manual nature related to the maintenance and construction of roads. Work may also extend into the operating of a variety of light and medium level equipment. Generally no supervision is given to other employees and direct supervision is received from a supervisor.


Essential functions of position includes;

 

  • Perform manual road construction and maintenance tasks.
  • Install and remove snow fence
  • Replace guardrail, road patching
  • Cut brush, tar cracks, use hand and small power tools
  • Collect refuse from various roadways and other similar manual tasks.
  • Operate light and medium duty equipment for plowing, sanding, salting as well as for the transporting of maintenance materials.
  • Operate industrial tractors for roadside maintenance
  • Drive quad and tri axle trucks engaged in the transportation of construction and maintenance materials.
  • Operate higher level equipment in accordance with established procedures.


Minimum Qualifications:
 

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • Commercial driver’s license (CDL) or ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire required. 
  • Must have a safe driving record.
  • Experience working physically demanding duties.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment preferred.
  • Any combination of education and experience necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
